Turpentine as a chemical raw material is widely used in art glass, paint, camphor manufacturing, pharmaceutical, rosin manufacturing and other industries have the opportunity to contact turpentine.

Turpentine is an excellent solvent with strong dissolving ability to organic matters. It is traditionally used in paint, drying agent, ointment, shoe polish, adhesive and medicine.Using the main components of turpentine, after reprocessing, many new products have been developed in the synthesis of chemicals and spices.

(1)synthesis of terpene alcohol: -pinene is easily hydrated with open ring under the catalysis of sulfuric acid to produce terpene glycol hydrate. Terpene glycol hydrate dehydrogenates 1 molecule of water under the action of dilute acid to produce terpene alcohol mixture, whose main components are -terpinol (see terpinol, pinoil).

(2) synthetic camphor: when stimulated by titanium white, pinene isomers to camphor.Camphene reacts with formic acid or glacial acetic acid to form isobornyl ester.The synthetic camphor is obtained by dehydrogenation.

(3) linalool: alpha-pinene is hydrogenated into pinane, and pinane is oxidized into peroxide by air, followed by reduction to get pinanol, followed by thermal cracking to get linalool, which is a large variety of spices and an intermediate for synthesis of vitamin E. After esterification, linalool acetate and other esters are obtained.

(4)-pinene is pyrolyzed into laurene, which is the largest intermediate of spices.Laurene can be used to produce geraniol, neroli alcohol, neolilial aldehyde, curacao cyanal, as well as dragosialone with ambergris and wood fragrance, dicyclononitrile with strong animal fragrance, pterodactone, etc.Linalyl acetate was obtained by hydrochlorination of laurene with sodium acetate and then saponified to linalyl alcohol.

(5) Chinese masson pine turpentine contains more sesquiterpene longifolene and caryophyllene.Catalyzed by acid, longifolene can be used to form isolongifolene, which is the raw material of isolongifolone, epoxy isolongifolane, hydroxymethyl isolongifolene acetate, etc., all of which have woody aroma.Longifolene is treated with formic acid to form formic acid ester of wood fragrance type.Acetylcaryophyllene can be obtained by acetylation of caryophyllene, and it can be epoxidized to caryophyllene, which is flowery, and its ketone is woody and ambergris.
